The future is in hydrogen in Las Vegas from 7 to 10 January 2025: the outlook for CES 2025

8 Aug 2024

Hydrogen as the energy carrier of the future is one of the topics at the centre of CES 2025, the world’s most famous technology event, taking place in Las Vegas from 7 to 10 January 2025.

The CES (Consumer Electronics Show) brings together manufacturers, developers and suppliers of consumer technology hardware. It is the only trade fair that presents the entire technology landscape in a single event. Therefore, CES is a key meeting point for innovators, decision makers, media, influencers, visionaries and potential customers from the entire technology ecosystem.

The main hydrogen topics at CES 2025

CES 2025 highlights several key topics, with a specific focus on energy and hydrogen innovations as well.

At CES 2025 exhibiting companies will present innovative technology products in all areas of consumer technology and industry leaders will offer interesting insights into future trends.

In addition, the event offers a comprehensive overview of emerging technologies and practical applications, through to sustainability policies and large-scale implementation strategies. Hydrogen, with its potential as a sustainable energy carrier, is also among the stars of the debate, with experts and industry leaders sharing their visions and latest research.

Among the initiatives planned at CES 2025 is the CES Innovation Awards. This is a competition that rewards the most innovative design and engineering in consumer technology products. Specifically, innovation awards will be given to the highest rated solutions in the various consumer technology product categories.

Among the many categories of exhibitors at CES 2025 is vehicle technology and advanced mobility. In this area, already during the 2024 edition, interesting technology innovations emerged from some exhibitors.

But let’s take a step back, what innovations were brought to the 2024 edition that will drive the future hydrogen market?

Sustainable mobility with Hyundai at CES 2024

On the subject of sustainable mobility, Hyundai attended CES 2024 to underline its commitment to driving human-centred innovations with hydrogen energy, software and artificial intelligence (AI).Sustainable mobility with Hyundai at CES 2024

Specifically, at CES 2024, Hyundai presented a number of novelties and innovations highlighting the importance of hydrogen as the energy carrier of the future. The carmaker outlined advances in the field of fuel cells and presented a hydrogen value chain solution that includes:

  • production
  • storage
  • transport
  • utilisation

This focus on hydrogen highlights Hyundai’s commitment to sustainable mobility.

Indeed, Hyundai is a leader in the development of fuel cell technology. Moreover, it was the first carmaker to market hydrogen vehicles in 2013 with the ix35 Fuel Cell. Hyundai’s second generation FCEV, the NEXO, has a range of 666 km (WLTP) on a single tank of hydrogen, emits only water vapour and purifies the air while driving.

In order to market a hydrogen infrastructure that makes the technology more accessible to customers, Hyundai has signed a number of strategic partnerships, including one with
GRZ Technologies. This is a Swiss company specialising in energy storage in the form of hydrogen.

Among other things, in 2020, Hyundai announced that GRZ Technologies would integrate the fuel cell system for stationary applications. Examples of such applications are peak shaving or emergency backup power. Specifically, the fuel cells are integrated into GRZ’s DASH Power systems with solid-state hydrogen storage.

Bosch and the hydrogen heat engine at CES 2024

At CES Las Vegas 2024, Bosch announced the development of components for an innovative hydrogen-powered heat engine. Basically, Bosch plans to launch this new type of engine onto the market by the end of the year.
In fact, hydrogen is one of the two pillars of Bosch’s decarbonisation strategy. Specifically, between 2021 and 2026, the company plans to invest around EUR 2.5 billion in the development and production of proprietary hydrogen technologies.

Furthermore, the new generation ICE engine, i.e. internal combustion rather than electric, uses hydrogen as fuel instead of petrol or diesel. This engine works in a similar way to the fossil-fuelled version. The hydrogen, stored in a pressure tank, is injected into the combustion chamber of the engine cylinder and ignites on contact with air, producing energy.
