Hydrogen Opportunities as an alternative energy carrier to invest in today

5 May 2023

In recent years, there has been increasing talk of alternative energy carriers, and nowadays one opportunity to invest in is definitely hydrogen.

Let us take a step back. Several countries, including Europe, have set themselves the goal of achieving decarbonisation by 2050 with the aim of being powered exclusively by renewable sources.

For this reason, there is a growing trend towards finding more ‘sustainable’ energy solutions by using alternative energy sources, i.e. renewables that have little impact on the planet’s ecosystem.

But what are energy carriers?

Alternative energy carriers

Alternative energy carriers are all forms of secondary energy that cannot be directly utilised as soon as they are harvested.

The real difference to an energy source that is already available in nature is that an energy carrier is ‘created and produced’ by storing energy between its chemical bonds. As a result, energy can be more easily transported and released when it is used.

In a nutshell, this is the main distinction from alternative energies such as solar and wind power.

So let’s find out what alternative energy carriers are:

  • Methanol
  • Electricity
  • Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)
  • E-fuels
  • Hydrogen

In the world, the demand for energy continues to grow and the race for renewables is indispensable. This is why in recent years there has been talk of an energy vector par excellence that represents a key element and link between energy production from renewable sources and a decarbonised energy system: we are talking about hydrogen.

In fact, all the energy carriers listed can be produced from hydrogen.

Hydrogen as an alternative energy carrier of the future

Among the alternative energy carriers of the future, as already mentioned, hydrogen is attracting great attention.

This element is one of the undisputed protagonists for technological evolution and for achieving zero net emissions by 2050.

Being an energy carrier, to be used as energy it must first be produced.

This is possible through various production processes and hydrogen can be an important sustainable energy solution by replacing energy sources that have a greater impact on the environment.

Some of the main advantages of hydrogen include:

  • clean combustion
  • direct use in the fuel cell
  • can be produced from numerous energy sources, both fossil and renewable, and from nuclear energy

Therefore, a key role in this context is reserved for hydrogen from renewable sources as per EU legislation 2018/2011 (RED II), a directive focused on promoting the use of energy from renewable sources.

Evaluate hydrogen as an alternative energy carrier with Simplifhy

At Simplifhy, we offer the opportunity to evaluate hydrogen as an alternative energy source through technologies based on the use of this element as an energy carrier or alternative fuel.

Specifically, we realise tailor-made projects for each reality and for the most diverse hydrogen application sectors.
Our mission is to simplify the approach to the implementation of technologies based on the use of hydrogen.

Thanks to the know-how and experience acquired, we are the single point of contact during:

  • the design and feasibility study
  • project engineering and execution (including authorisation and bureaucratic)
  • hydrogen transport
  • installation and maintenance of systems
