At the 2024 edition of Hydrogen Expo in Piacenza, Simplifhy received the Engineering & EPC award in the ‘Service Company’ category.
This award was given to us for having realised, on behalf of ITSGREEN Academy in Vimercate, the first educational laboratory in Italy dedicated to hydrogen.
The project realised by Simplifhy for ITSGREEN Academy
The Engineering & EPC prize awarded in Piacenza during Hydrogen Expo 2024 demonstrates the importance of the project we implemented at the Vimercate site of ITSGREEN Academy.
In fact, the ITSGREEN educational laboratory is dedicated to hydrogen and represents a pioneering initiative, offering students the opportunity to immerse themselves in an environment of research and experimentation on the most advanced hydrogen-related technologies.
The laboratory is primarily based on water electrolysis technology, with two modules operating in parallel, for a net installed power of 4.8 kW and a production capacity of 90 g/h of hydrogen (1 Nm3/h). In detail, the facility is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, including:
- AEM technologies for hydrogen production
- PEM fuel cells
- compression and storage systems.
Everything is integrated with advanced automation and safety systems to ensure a practical, state-of-the-art training experience.

Let’s take a detailed look at the activities we took care of for the realisation of this innovative project.
Hydrogen plant design
At Simplifhy, we handled all design activities for the new hydrogen production plant. First of all, we performed the dimensioning of the main machines. In addition, we devoted ourselves to the development of the final engineering of the plant and the documentation required to obtain permits from the relevant authorities.
We also developed the technical specifications for the requests for tenders and the subsequent technical-economic alignment of the offers received from suppliers.
Since this was a plant built for educational purposes, we designed it taking care to include a large number of components to enable the processes of the entire hydrogen supply chain to be tested.
Executive engineering of the hydrogen production plant
We also took care of the executive engineering of the ITSGREEN laboratory, from the development of the plans to the realisation of the construction works, and the documentation for the implementation of the electro-instrumental system of the production system and the cable routes.
In addition, with regard to the mechanical and piping part (i.e. the piping system), we carried out the development of the documentation required for:
- sizing and selection of the piping for the installation
- realisation of the piping route
- installation of all equipment
Security of the ITSGREEN laboratory
We have paid the utmost attention to all aspects of laboratory safety, to ensure the protection of people and property against fire hazards. In particular, the system complies with the ISO 22734 standard and, as per DM 07/07/23, is built and managed in such a way as to:
- minimise the causes of accidental gas release
- limit, in the event of an accidental event, damage to people, buildings or premises adjacent to the plant
- guarantee the possibility for rescue teams to operate in safe conditions.
Simplifhy’s commitment to educating the next generation about hydrogen
At Simplifhy, we are convinced that educating the next generation about hydrogen is essential if we are to meet the challenges of the energy transition that lie ahead.
So much so that our collaboration with ITSGREEN Academy, launched in 2022, has focused on training courses geared towards sustainable mobility and the decarbonisation of transport. This new laboratory represents a decisive step towards preparing students to become protagonists of the energy transition, combining theory and practice in a highly specialised educational pathway.
Thus, our participation in Hydrogen Expo 2024 and the recognition we received are a clear testimony of our commitment to promoting innovative and sustainable solutions, not only in industry but also in education.
