We have been selected as suppliers for the Hy2Tech IPCEI project, led by the Bruno Kessler Foundation (FBK) and funded by the PNRR. The project involves the creation of a new research infrastructure dedicated to hydrogen at the Sustainable Energy Centre in Rovereto, Trentino-Alto Adige.
The Bruno Kessler Foundation is a multidisciplinary research institution specialising in technology, innovation, and the humanities and social sciences, based in Trento.
Specifically, Simplifhy was chosen by FBK for this project through a public tender for the supply and installation of equipment for the new hydrogen research infrastructure.
Simplifhy’s role in hydrogen research
As part of the IPCEI Hy2Tech project, we at Simplifhy will contribute to the development of Lot 2, which focuses on metal hydride hydrogen storage systems – an innovative technology that makes hydrogen storage safer, more efficient and more sustainable.
Specifically, our contribution involves the integration and engineering of a complete hydrogen storage system, designed to support the operational needs of the research centre.
The collaboration with GRZ Technologies
To build the hydrogen storage system, we will be working with our partner GRZ Technologies, a Swiss company specialising in the development of metal hydride storage technologies.
The partnership involves integrating GRZ Technologies’ proprietary technology into a containerised system designed by Simplifhy, capable of ensuring high standards of safety, operational efficiency and reliability. The system will be used for research and technological validation activities related to future industrial applications of hydrogen.
This collaboration represents a further step forward in the deployment of innovative hydrogen storage technologies, a key aspect in promoting the development and large-scale deployment of hydrogen production and storage facilities.
Metal hydride hydrogen storage: the technology chosen for Lot 2
Lot 2 of the project involves the construction of a metal hydride hydrogen storage system with a capacity of approximately 45 kg of hydrogen.
Metal hydride hydrogen storage technology allows hydrogen to be stored more safely and efficiently than other storage methods such as high-pressure compression or cryogenic liquefaction.
In fact, by using patented metal hydride alloys, the system developed by GRZ enables hydrogen to be stored safely within a solid matrix at low pressure. Each alloy absorbs hydrogen at low temperature and releases it when heated: a fully reversible, highly efficient and inherently safe thermochemical process.
This solid-state hydrogen storage technology offers high density, stability and reliable performance across a wide range of applications.
Thermal management system and BOP engineering
Simplifhy’s remit includes the complete engineering of the thermal management system, a key component in ensuring the proper functioning of the metal hydride hydrogen storage system.
In addition, we will be responsible for the design and integration of the Balance of Plant (BOP) for the entire hydrogen storage system.
Our engineering approach aims to optimise the system’s performance, whilst ensuring high standards of safety and reliability.
Delivery, installation and commissioning of equipment
In addition to the design and integration work, we will also oversee the delivery, installation and commissioning of the entire system at the Fondazione Bruno Kessler research centre.
These operations will include commissioning the equipment and verifying the correct functioning of the hydrogen storage system, ensuring it is fully operational.
Our participation in the Hy2Tech IPCEI project confirms our position as a technology partner for the development of innovative solutions dedicated to the production and storage of green hydrogen, making a concrete contribution to the evolution of technologies for the decarbonisation of industry and transport.
