Our CEO Sergio Torriani participated as a speaker at the study day “Hydrogen: between current reality and opportunities for the future” organized last November by the Italian Metallurgy Association (AIM). The event, which took place in webinar format, was an important opportunity for discussion between academia, industry, and institutions on the strategic role of hydrogen in the Italian and European energy economy.
Sergio Torriani’s presentation, entitled “Hydrogen production and circularity, applications in the industrial context,” was part of a comprehensive program that addressed all aspects of the hydrogen supply chain: from production to storage, from transport to industrial applications, with a particular focus on the role of metallic materials.
The AIM Study Day, sponsored by H2IT – Italian Hydrogen Association, involved experts from universities, CNR research centers, and leading companies in the energy and infrastructure sectors.
Simplifhy’s vision for industrial decarbonization with hydrogen
Sergio Torriani’s presentation at the AIM webinar highlighted how green hydrogen, produced from renewable sources through electrolysis, is a key element in achieving Europe’s industrial decarbonization targets:
- 40% reduction in CO₂ emissions by 2030 compared to 1990
- climate neutrality by 2050.
Our philosophy is to simplify the approach to implementing hydrogen-based technologies. We offer ourselves as a single point of contact for the design, feasibility study, engineering, and execution phases of projects, including authorizations, paperwork, transport, installation, and maintenance of the plants.
As an Italian solution provider specializing in industrial decarbonization strategies through hydrogen-based technologies, we have developed an integrated approach that accompanies customers throughout the entire process. Our distinctive services include:
- support for foreign companies wishing to implement solutions for hydrogen production and use in Italy
- specialization in national and European calls for proposals for the financing of innovative projects
- development of solutions for local hydrogen production that reduce transportation costs and lower the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).
Hydrogen production and storage: how materials influence projects
The AIM webinar took an in-depth look at the key issue of compatibility between hydrogen and metallic materials, to better understand whether this represents a limiting factor or an opportunity.
The study day examined various aspects of this relationship. In particular, Fabio Bolzoni from the Politecnico di Milano specifically addressed the compatibility between hydrogen and metallic materials, while Marco Palombo from H2 IIS Sider illustrated the characterization methodologies for testing with gaseous hydrogen. Giovanni Capurso from the University of Udine explored the aspect of hydrogen in metals and intermetallic compounds for solid-state storage.
Particular attention was paid to the engineering challenges posed by hydrogen in practical use. Luca Bacchi from Snam spoke about regulations and testing for hydrogen transport in pipelines, while Andrea Ciani and Erica Vacchieri from Ansaldo Energia addressed issues, technologies, and consequences for materials in hydrogen combustion in gas turbines.
The multidisciplinary approach of the Study Day made it possible to outline a complete picture of the hydrogen value chain, highlighting how metallic materials play a decisive role in every phase: production, storage, transport, and end use.
During the webinar, we at Simplifhy had the opportunity to share the experience we have gained through concrete projects implementing green hydrogen in real industrial contexts, demonstrating how the circular economy and decarbonization can be effectively integrated into production processes.
Prospects for Italian industry in the hydrogen supply chain
The webinar highlighted the strategic opportunities that hydrogen offers to the Italian industrial system in the context of the European energy transition. The proceedings began with a presentation by Guido Bortoni of AEIT on the role of hydrogen in the Italian and European energy landscape, followed by Marcello Baricco of the University of Turin on the opportunities for metallic materials linked to the development of the hydrogen economy. After him, Vladimiro Dal Santo of CNR SCITEC explored the role of materials in low-carbon hydrogen production.
Francesca Bianchi, Alessandro Spalletti, Margherita Pero, Guido J.L. Micheli, Jinou Xu, and Paolo Trucco from the Politecnico di Milano offered a particularly relevant contribution on the transition to the hydrogen economy from the perspective of supply chains, analyzing how the different components of the value chain can be integrated and developed.
Davide Bonalumi, also from the Politecnico di Milano, presented low-carbon hydrogen production pathways, highlighting the various technological options and their applicability to the Italian context.
Specifically, Italy has the opportunity to position itself as a technological and production hub in the hydrogen supply chain, leveraging its established expertise in the metallurgical, energy, and manufacturing sectors. The development of this supply chain requires investment in research, specialized training, and infrastructure, but in return offers opportunities for economic growth, the creation of skilled jobs, and a reduction in energy dependence on foreign countries.
Traditionally energy-intensive and hard-to-abate industrial sectors such as steel, ceramics, glass, chemicals, and waste treatment can benefit significantly from the adoption of hydrogen-based technologies. Sustainable mobility, both for public transport and heavy logistics, is another area of application with strong development potential.
